Fragrant aromas of cherry liqueur, red currants, rose petals, blueberries, violets, vanilla bean and warm baking spices greet with what Executive Winemaker, Michael Davies, calls "An amazing nose!" As the wine opens in the glass, more complex notes appear with hints of iron, wet stones, ruby port, iris, cinnamon and smoke emerge. On the palate, the attack is exceptionally well-balanced, undoubtedly feminine, floral and pure, in a classical sense. It is lithe and textured with flavors that echo the red and blue fruit aromas as well as succulent hints of blackberry jam, thyme, strawberry, citrus and trifle dessert. The balance of the wine continues through the mid-palate and into the long finish, with lingering notes of wet stones, spices and dark cherries. The 2013 REX HILL Sims Vineyard is a classic example of Oregon Pinot Noir grown on volcanic soils from an exceptional year. This wine is drinking well right now, but it will reward patient cellaring by growing more complex and integrated over the next 15 years.
